Funky Italian White Wine
There is more to Italian white wine than Pinot Grigio or Soave.
Travel down south to Italy's shin, toe or heel and you can find some really fun, funky white wine.
Case in point: The Terredora winery in Campania (that would be the shin). They make a white wine out of the Falanghina grape - definitely not a wine grape most of us know anything about.
I tried the Falanghina-based wine, 'Irpinia' (2003).
The Skinny
Terredora Dipaolo
Falanghina 'Irpinia' 2003 ($13)
Pale straw yellow in color
Intense aroma of fruit - Golden Delicious apples, pears, pineapple
The flavor is suprising: mineral, stony tastes. It's full-bodied with some freshness. (Hurray, hurray! No oak.)
**** (4 stars out of 5)
Interestingly enough, I paired this wine with falafel! It was actually a nice pairing; highlighting the various components of this food. It also is a nice match with seafood, linguine alfredo and many cheeses.
