Baja Bordeaux Blend
I've previously posted about Monte Xanic's Chenin Blanc (part of the Chalone Wine Group)from Baja, Mexico. I recently picked up MX's Vina Kristel. This is a white Bordeaux blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. Unfortunately I don't speak Spanish and Monte Xanic's site seems to be completely en Espanol. I got crafty and used AltaVista's Babel Fish Translation service to translate the tasting note and here is one of the surprising results:
"One characterizes by its aromas to fragmentation hand grenade and pear, and delicate notes to mantequilla fresh, caramel and hemstitches."
Well, either the translation software needs some work or I really need to increase my tasting note vocabulary. I did sense the pear by the way.
The Skinny
Monte Xanic "Vina Kristel," '03 ($10)
- From Valle de Guadeloupe, Baja, Mexico
- Medium yellow-gold in color. Fairly sticky on the glass's sides
- Scents of citrus and ripe pear with definite grassy/alfalfa notes
- Solidly medium in body. Concentrated fruit flavors; a little light on the acid end of the spectrum. The wine opens up nicely after 30+ minutes. Unique in style
*** (3 stars out of 5)
An affordable, interesting/unique wine. It paired up quite nicely with Thai chicken satays & spicy peanut sauce. Give it a try. No hand grenades - promise.
