The first serious wine class I attended was taught by Andrea Immer. And for that I am supremely grateful. At the time, I felt as if I knew nothing about wine. I would occasionally eavesdrop on "wine types'" conversations and be mystified by the discussion of Chateau This and Domaine That; and don't forget Clos Whatever-that-was.
Before setting foot in Andrea's class, I had read her book, "Great Wine Made Simple." I even tried to hold three glasses in each hand like she's doing on the cover (I couldn't). The book imparted her down home/"hey ya'll" approach to wine. She didn't dumb the subject down, rather she made wine accessible to the neophyte.
The live version of Ms. Immer is even mo' better than the print version. I looked forward to each and every one of her classes. And I try to model my no-nonsense, non-threatening approach to wine teaching and writing after her. So a hearty, "Cheers!" to my Wine Swami, Andrea Immer. Visit her site. So tell me; who is your Wine Swami? I'm eager to hear who/what sparked the wine passion within.
That same book is actually one of the first books I ever read on the subject...even before I really became "serious" about vino.
Nowadays, so much of my wine knowledge comes from the people I meet via my blog or via my work in the local wine industry. It's amazing how much you learn just being "around" sometimes. If I had to pick one "live person"...I'd have to pick Roman Roth of Wolffer Estate.
