The Ugly Corkling

This little corkling started out ugly...

..but ended up beautiful (and protected a wonderfully tasty bottle of 1995 Moelleux Vouvray)

Wow...never seen that end result. Any idea what cause that external damage?

To be honest, I'm not certain. However, I have seen the same sort of thing on a number of old-ish Vouvray bottles. I know many of the wineries' cellars are dug into the 'Tuffeau' - a clay-limestone soil near the Loire River. I bet it's awfully damp in many cellars. Perhaps the mold got a good start in this damp-dark environment, began working its way down the cork, but was foiled by the sticky-seal bond between cork and fermenting wine. Of course I could be completely wrong...

Any Vouvray-o-philes know?
