Bogle Continues to Boggle
As one who thinks many California wines are somewhat over-priced, Bogle vineyards stands out with an entire line of great wines at mind-bogglingly low prices. Most of Bogle's wines are not tied to specific vineyard sites or terroir. For example, Bogle's Petite Sirah* ('02, $11) is labeled simply, 'California' This tells me that whoever is making the wine at Bogle is/are very talented.
Bravo!
Bogle Petite Sirah, California, '02 ($11)
Deep, dark, inky indigo color with a ruby rim
Scents of black cherry, pepper along with a woody/brushy character.
A solid, medium-bodied wine with moderate tannins giving way to fruity & spicy flavors, hints of anise and a pleasant finish.
***.5 (3.5 stars out of 5)
*By the way Petite Sirah is not Syrah. Actually, there have been three varietals using this name: Durif, Peloursin and Syrah - all from France's Rhône valley. However, most Petite Sirah that is currently bottled is very likely Durif:
"Just over 3,200 acres of grapes identified as Petite Sirah are presently planted in California. Although only a portion of these vineyards have been surveyed, recent DNA evidence from research led by Dr. Carole Meredith at the University of California at Davis has confirmed most plantings to be the same grape as Durif. About 10% however, is Peloursin, which, observed in the field, is practically indistinguishable from Durif, even by expert ampelographers."
