A Spaniard in Name Only
Puerta Palma is a Spanish red that comes from the D.O. Ribera del Guadiana located in the region of Extremadura - Southwestern Spain. Like many of the 'new' wines coming from Spain, Puerta Palma is unmistakeably new-world in style. It's full-bodied, fruity and powerful.
It doesn't taste like a Spanish wine. It's more like an Aussie blend or a PowerCabernet from California. As I've stated before, I don't like the idea (or the taste) of 'wine globalization.'
The Skinny
Puerta Palma, '01 ($15)
DO Ribera del Guadiana (Extremadura, Spain)
Inky indigo in color with orange undertones
A burst of fruit and oak flavors - blackberry, black cherry, sweet spice & caramel
Full-body, high alcohol content amplified by low acidity. Moderate tannins with a long, somewhat tart finish. Overall a little flabby
** (2 stars out of 5)
For $15 or less, I can think of more Spanish and better-tasting wine. Take this one for example.
