Real Rioja for $10
Montecillo Rioja is imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons. And I thank them for it.
Montecillo's Crianza is 100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alta. It's made with French oak casks and aged therein for 18 months. The result? A wine that, in my opinion, showcases why Old School Rioja wines are usually outstanding values and quite tasty.
The Skinny
Montecillo Rioja Crianza, '00 ($10)
From Spain's Rioja region; specifically Rioja Alta
Moderate ruby in color with a garnet rim
Full scents of red cherry, red currant, and peppery spice; coupled with some earthiness for good measure (this says, "Hola Rioja," to me)
In the mouth it's medium-bodied & finds a nice balance of tannin, fruitiness, and acidity. A long, pleasant finish.
****(4 stars out of 5)
Have this little Spanish gem with food and it will dazzle your senses. Some food-ideas: Manchego cheese, almond-bacon-date tapa, steak au poivre, and if you open this wine on a 'cheat' day - a bacon double-cheeseburger!
