Superquick Takes: the Whites

Logowind_2During my whirlwind day trip to San Francisco, I tasted muchos vinos at Vino Venue.  My Superquick takes on a few of the whites:

I.  Jurtschitch Sonnhoff Grüner Veltliner, '03 ($15).  From Kamptal, Austria

  • Watery straw yellow in color
  • Honeyed aroma with subtle, grassy scents
  • Taste is quite different from the nose.  Very racy, herbal; with slight citrus flavors
  • Yum!

II.  Ruston "Juliana Vineyard" Semillon, '03 ($20).  From Napa Valley

  • Very pale white gold color
  • Scents of pink grapefruit & ripe bartlet pear
  • Very crisp in the mouth with 'lean' flavors of citrus and herbs
  • Not so much :(

III.  Domaine Cherrier et Fils AOC Sancerre, '03 ($19).  From the Sancerre region of France's Loire Valley

  • Light yellow-gold color with slight green hue
  • Scents of lemongrass, herbs, apricot & lime
  • Tangy attack in the mouth; followed by green fruit flavors and a moderately long finish
  • Yum!

IV.  Claiborne & Churchill "Alsatian Style" Dry Gewürztraminer, '03 ($16).  From the Central Coast, California

  • If it's "Alsatian" in style, what's with the umlauts??
  • Medium-gold color, not very viscous (clingy on the sides of the glass) for a Gewurz
  • Duck!  It's a Lychee-bomb with Mandarin orange and tangerine scents
  • Light body (for a Gewurz).  Somewhat crisp in the mouth, but not a whole lot goin' on
  • Not so much :(

Just noticed that the two 'Yums' are from Europe and the two 'not-so-much-es' are domestic. Alright, alright, I'm a Euro-Oeno-phile. I admit it. I lurves me my old world, earthy/funky/dusty/barnyard-y wine.
