Cava+
Most Cava (Spanish bubbly made by the traditional/champagne method) falls into the simple, well-made, good-value category.
I would describe Codorniu Cuvée Raventós as Cava+. It is a bit more complex than your standard Cava.
Codorniu has been in the wine game for some time. Since 1551. And it aint no small potatoes - try 25 km of underground cellar space.
The oldest known family document is an inventory of wine producing equipment written by Jaume Codorníu, who is the founder of our pride and vineyard and winery owner in the Penedés. This manuscript is starting pointof a falimy's journey in a five hundred year tradition of grape growing and creation of wines.
The Skinny
Codorniu Cuvée Raventós Cava, NV ($11-$12)
- From Penedes, Spain; Made from Chardonnay, Xarel-lo, Macabeo
- Moderate gold color with slightly-bigger-than-Champagne bubbles
- Not the expected citrus scents; but rather biscuit, mineral, and golden delicious apples
- Fairly full-bodied, with a rich flavor and lasting finish.
**** (4 stars out of 5)
This cava plays a good solo as an aperitif. It also is excellent with an arugula, Manchego, carmelized walnut, and apple salad.
