Fun with Herpetology: Suriname Toad

Pipa pipa (AKA Suriname Toad) is the most unique representative of its family.  What family is that you ask?  The flat, tongueless, back-birthing frog family (Pipidae).  Some fun facts:

  • The female gives birth to fully-formed froglets that developed on her back in little pockets covered in skin
  • Strictly aquatic
  • No tongue!
  • Endemic to Suriname
