Grüβ Gott, Grüner!
Austrian Fred Loimer sounds like my kind of wine Mensch:
"Fred Loimer is going full steam ahead. And even with all that he has accomplished, there is still a lot of work to be done. So he continues on, without batting an eye. There is his new winery in Langenlois, for example, which has caused quite a stir in the Austrian wine and architecture scenes. And through this unusual monolithic-style construction, the 40-year-old winemaker from Lower Austria has earned himself another medal of experience. Still, he knows that there is much more to come."
And just how would one describe Loimer's wine mascot?
Ahem.
I won't touch that; but I will touch his Grüner Veltliner again and again.
The Skinny
Loimer Langenlois Gruner Veltliner, '03 ($18)
- From Austria's Kamptal
- Bright white gold in color
- "Riesling with a lime twist and dash of pepper" - Golden Delish apple, white pear, Honeydew; along with hints of citrus and white pepper
- Medium bodied with straightforward fruit flavor. Well-balanced, not over-bearing, and a stony/mineral finish
***.5 (3.5 stars)
A fine spring/summer food wine that even holds its own against Arrabiatta sauce!
