Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch"
#2 from the WG (#1 below)
2002 Shafer Vineyards Chardonnay "Red Shoulder Ranch" ($38)
Clear, with a medium lemon yellow core fading to a pale watery rim. Clean, youthful nose, with pronounced aromas of tropical fruits, toasty oak, ripe pear and smoke. Dry with a sweet attack. Intense flavors of toasty pineapple, honeysuckle, ctirus and ripe pears. Medium acidity, full-bodied, with high alcohol and long length. Very good quality Carneros chardonnay, made in a typical fruit-forward, New World style. Alcohol makes for a slightly warm finish, but wine is otherwise well-balanced and is best drunk now and over the next 3 years.
